Johnny Walker needed less than three rounds to turn a replacement main event into the best moment of UFC Vegas 124. On Saturday night at the Meta Apex in Las Vegas, he knocked out Waldo Cortes-Acosta at 2:27 of the third round of their heavyweight bout, with a head kick, a back fist and a straight right hand.

The result moves Walker to 24-10 with one no contest. Cortes-Acosta falls to 17-5, according to Sherdog, and his 2026 now holds three losses.

How it unfolded

Per Sherdog's report, Walker spent the early going kicking Cortes-Acosta's leg and staying out of range of his wild power punches. As the fight went on, Cortes-Acosta slowed. The head kick came first, then a back fist that buckled Cortes-Acosta's knees, and then the right hand to the jaw that dropped him.

Cortes-Acosta was essentially out, but Walker kept throwing until referee Jason Herzog pulled him off. UFC.com lists the finish as a KO/TKO in round three at 2:27, the same time Sherdog gives.

It was a fight with real danger in it for Walker. Cortes-Acosta carries heavy hands, and he had run off knockouts earlier in his UFC run, including over Derrick Lewis, according to MMASucka. Walker's answer was patience first and violence second: take away the legs, let the bigger man spend energy, then finish.

A main event nobody planned

This was not the fight the UFC sold. Sean Brady was supposed to headline against Gabriel Bonfim, but Brady withdrew. He later said on The BradyBagz Show that a staph infection, which he believes started from a small cut, left him unable to walk, MMASucka reported. The promotion could not find Bonfim a new opponent in time, and Bonfim came off the card. Cortes-Acosta vs. Walker was reported on Oct. 29 as the replacement headliner.

Walker, 34, arrived with a trajectory that had been bumpy. He lost a decision to Dominick Reyes at UFC 327 in April, then moved up from light heavyweight and made his heavyweight debut against Mick Parkin at UFC 332 on Oct. 3. He won that one with a knee, per Cageside Press. Saturday's finish makes it two heavyweight fights and two knockouts.

For Cortes-Acosta, the result stings more in context. He lost back-to-back decisions to Alexander Volkov in May and Curtis Blaydes in September, and a main-event stoppage loss comes right behind them.

Bonuses and the rest of the card

This was the night's best fight on the bonus sheet. Sherdog reports that Walker and Cortes-Acosta each took a Fight of the Night bonus, and UFC.com tags the main event the same way. Four fighters earned bonuses overall.

In the co-main event, Tatiana Suarez beat Virna Jandiroba by unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 29-28), using strikes and repeated takedowns. Sherdog says the win moves her closer to a shot at strawweight champion Mackenzie Dern. Elsewhere on the main card, Elijah Smith knocked out Davey Grant in the first round, a stoppage at the one-minute mark.

What it means

The reporting we could confirm does not say what comes next for Walker, so any next-opponent talk is speculation for now. What the win does establish is that Walker's move to heavyweight is more than a one-off. Two fights, two knockouts, and a main-event win as a late replacement make a persuasive case for a ranked opponent next. Heavyweight rarely lacks for options, and a fighter who finishes the way Walker did on Saturday tends to be remembered when the matchmakers sit down.
